Elements of the green roof Special substrates 6 min read 1 14 1. Extensive substrate Description The extensiv substrate is a low nutrient, spongy textured, volcanic origin plant growing medium that provides a rooting zone with good drainage and high water holding capacity, is used in 2-8 cm layers and is suitable for Sedum Light and Sedum Ready-Mix mulch or for seeding with Sedum cuttings/ seedlings. Due to the special composition, it provides optimal aeration for the roots of the vegetation. The substrate is made of mineralised volcanic rock tuff, the granules have a blue-grey colour. The substrate is adapted to the needs of the vegetation, provides optimal space for healthy plant growth and is produced in accordance with FLL (German Green Roof Standard). PDF data sheet Advantages Improves nutrient intake, growth and plant health. Ensures adequate pH for healthy plant growth. Due to its low weight, it can also be used in buildingswith low load-bearing capacity. Properties Reduces temperature fluctuations, has heatattenuation capacity. Has water retention enhancing capacity, while beingbreathable. Provides stable structure for plant rooting. 2. Intensive substrate Description Intensiv substrate is a growing medium for plants, it is suitable for intensive green roofs planted with Biogazon or Biodivers mats. Also, depending on the thickness of the substrate, it can be used for growing larger plants such as shrubs and tall trees (up to 12 m). The substrate consists of a mix of mineralised volcanic rock with a spongy texture and organic material. It is a growing medium that provides the necessary nutrients for plants, allows strong rooting and healthy plant growth; it has good drainage, yet high water retention capacity. PDF data sheet Advantages The lightweight structure allows intensive greenterraces to be installed on roof constructions. Ensures adequate pH for healthy plant growth. Improves nutrient intake, growth and plant health. Properties Reduces temperature fluctuations, has heatattenuation capacity. Has water retention enhancing capacity, while beingbreathable. Retains its stable structure and does not compactsignificantly over the years. 3. Volcano High porosity volcanic sediment Description Volcano is made of volcanic sediment with high porosity, it is an ideal choice for landscaping and green spaces, even as a decorative element. It is a natural substance with proven effectiveness in horticulture, provides an environmentally friendly solution, helps to treat soil sustainably and supports plant health. In the process of formation, the rock has incorporated micro and macro elements and thus has acquired excellent properties of improving soil structure, and also increases soil aeration. It is ideal for all soil types as it improves cohesive soils and strengthens sandy soils, reducing wind and rain erosion. PDF data sheet Its beneficial effects on the soil extend over a significant period of time, providing consistent benefits to soil and plants for a remarkable 5-8 years. Due to its versatility and positive impacts on the environment and soil, it is recommended for biodiverse green roofs. Volcanic pearls are available in different sizes: 0/12, 0/5, 5/12. Advantages Contributes to soil biological activity by providing a porous and spongy soil structure, reduces weed growth and improves drainage. Stabilises PH in the neutral range, optimises soil conditions and allows plants to take up nutrients more easily. It has excellent water capture and retention properties, prevents nutrient leaching and improves water balance, thus contributing to healthy plant growth. Thanks to its white shade and the wide range of granule sizes available, it is an ideal and elegant option for decorative use, providing an aesthetic look in gardens and green spaces. Properties Through its exceptional soil improving ability, it stimulates plant growth by 5-10%, promotes faster plant growth. It has a high content of potassium, zinc, iron, calcium and magnesium, contributes significantly to healthy plant growth stimulation. Absorption capacity reduces soil toxicity and traps harmful fungi and bacteria.
