Green Roofs – Common mistakes

A properly designed and constructed green roof, carried out by specialists in green terraces, will have a lifespan 3–5 times longer than conventional roofs, thus amortizing the investment.

However, in some cases, when clients or self-proclaimed experts try to save on design, execution costs, or material selection, without leaving it to specialists, functionality problems arise. The green roof may no longer support a healthy ecosystem and can cause significant, costly damages, in extreme cases even leading to loss of human life.

Here are the most common mistakes in green roof design and construction:

1. Ignoring structural load

When choosing a green roof type, the load-bearing capacity of the building structure must be considered. Static load calculations must take into account the weight of green roof layers (substrate, plants, trees, etc.) including water-saturated mass, as well as other potential loads (snow, wind, etc.). If heavy garden soil or excavated dirt is used instead of a light, well-drained substrate, it may prevent proper water drainage, causing water accumulation on the roof and additional unplanned load. 2. Minimizing the importance of roof slope

Another critical factor in design and construction is the roof slope or inclination. On lightweight structures, green roofs can be installed up to 45 degrees or more with proper design, considering type, specifics, and material quantities to maintain low load. Measures must be taken to stabilize green roof layers depending on slope. The steeper the slope, the higher the risk of substrate erosion. Additionally, the roof structure must be protected against sliding of the entire green roof layer. Neglecting these measures can lead to erosion, as shown in the adjacent image. For intensive green roofs with thicker substrate layers, proper slope management is even more critical.

3. Failing to ensure proper drainage

Proper drainage of green roof layers is crucial. The substrate quality, filter layer, drainage, and water retention layers are key elements to remove excess water while maintaining enough moisture for plants until the next rainfall. This requires a dynamic balance and careful planning. Using heavy or poorly draining soil, ordinary garden dirt, or rich compost is strictly forbidden by German FLL standards, adopted in Romanian regulations (Ministerial Order GP: 120-2012, Official Gazette Part I no. 803 bis/19 XII.2013). Poor drainage can lead to water accumulation, compaction of layers, oxygen deprivation, turning the green roof into a waterlogged, overly heavy mass and destroying the vegetation.

4. Unprotected drainage systems

During construction, all drainage systems (gutters, downspouts, roof drains, rainwater collectors) must be protected against clogging. Inspection boxes and grates prevent substrate and plant debris from entering the system, enabling easy cleaning. Gravel layers of at least 30 cm width are placed around these points. Proper construction and maintenance prevent clogs, as opposed to the blocked drainage systems shown in the image above.

5. Incorrect vegetation selection

For optimal development of a healthy ecosystem that will cover the roof or terrace for decades, plant selection must consider:

  • Green roof type (extensive, semi-intensive, or intensive)
  • Plant species installed
  • Substrate thickness and roof slope
  • Climate and microclimate, seasonal temperature variations, extreme conditions (drought, frost, etc.)
  • Wind direction, precipitation frequency
  • Pollution levels (acid rain, dust, heavy metals, etc.)

Neglecting these factors can lead to stunted, poorly developing vegetation, a neglected appearance, and failure to create a functional ecological environment.

6. Negligent design and execution

Even when safety rules are followed, the resulting green roof may look neglected or unfinished. Aesthetic compromises may be necessary for budget reasons, but functionality must never be compromised.
