An extensive green roof doesn’t start with the greenery, but with a great deal of invisible work. First, the vegetation areas are defined, and then the layers are installed according to a recipe that leaves no room for improvisation: protection and filter layers, a drainage layer, and only then the lightweight substrate specifically designed for sedum.

Planting sedum cuttings may seem like a simple task – you place them, gently press them into the soil, and wait for nature to do its work. But getting to that point is a long process.

The real challenge is not technical, but physical. We are talking about several dozen tonnes of materials that have to be lifted through a skylight measuring just 2 x 2 metres. There is no room for rushing and no room for frustration. Every bag passing through that opening seems to ask whether you’re really sure you want a green roof. The crane, workers secured with ropes, calculations made by eye and then checked again out of caution – all of these are part of the process.

When the sedum finally takes root and starts adding colour to the roof, you forget about your back, your aching palms and the hours spent on the job. What remains is the quiet satisfaction of knowing that you have built something alive where there was once only concrete.
