Commercial References Green roof with sedum in Bálványos 3 min read 0 43 The extensive green roof installed at the Balvanyos resort was designed from the very beginning as an integral part of the landscape rather than an element added later. The building is surrounded by forest, and the goal was for the green roofs to blend seamlessly into the surrounding greenery rather than stand out. For this reason, a simple and durable extensive system established with sedum cuttings was selected. The installation was carried out with great care, without any unnecessary intervention. The sedum cuttings were evenly distributed, gently pressed into the substrate, and then left to establish naturally at their own pace. Sedum roots quickly, binds to the growing medium, and gradually covers the surface in a natural way. The process is not spectacular overnight, but this gradual development is exactly what ensures a stable and long-lasting result. In addition to the sedum, trailing plants—primarily ivy—were also introduced, designed to cascade over the parapet walls and gradually create a continuous green cover. These plants will soften the building’s sharp architectural lines and visually connect the roof with the façades, making the structure appear as though it belongs in the forest rather than being built in the middle of it. As the vegetation matures, the green roofs become increasingly uniform, and the boundary between the building and the surrounding nature gradually disappears. This is the type of green roof that requires patience rather than constant attention and, over time, becomes a natural part of the mountain landscape of Balvanyos.
