The green façade installed at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iași (UMF Iași) has quickly become a landmark example of modern and environmentally friendly urban design.

For this large-scale project, we chose an advanced system consisting of planters and pre-grown ivy panels, mounted on a robust metal structure that generously covers the building wall. The major advantage of this technical solution is its almost immediate visual impact; unlike systems that start from scratch, our panels provide nearly 100% coverage from the moment they are installed, transforming a cold concrete surface into a vibrant green oasis in record time.

The efficiency of this living wall is based on a complex and sustainable technical system hidden from view. Irrigation is automated through drip irrigation and the collection of drained water. This approach protects the supporting structure and the surrounding environment from excessive moisture, while ensuring optimal hydration for every level of the stacked planters.

Nature, no matter how well it is integrated through technology, needs human attention to thrive in a demanding urban environment. Maintenance is a central pillar of this project’s success. Especially during the initial phase, we were constantly present to monitor the ivy’s adaptation to its new conditions. Although the frequency of interventions decreases over time, regular visits remain essential to maintain the health and appearance of the façade. In the photographs taken during the works, our team can be seen using an aerial work platform to precisely reach every section of the green wall.

The maintenance process includes the careful application of plant protection treatments to control pests and the necessary fertilisation to maintain the vigour and intense colour of the leaves. In addition, removing dry branches and guiding young shoots are meticulous but necessary operations to ensure the uniform density that passers-by admire today. The final result is a spectacular “green lung” that provides thermal and acoustic insulation for the building, while its natural texture creates a beautiful contrast with the surrounding architecture.

This project demonstrates that with solutions adapted to each individual project, proper maintenance, and the right technology, we can bring nature back into the built environment, creating lasting ecological landmarks.
