Oradea looks towards the future from a brown roof

On the rooftop of a tower block in a residential neighbourhood of Oradea, we prepared the ground for an ecosystem about to emerge.

We opted for an extensive brown roof system, a solution that does not require every individual cutting to be planted by hand, but instead creates the foundation for nature to do its work. We laid the specialised substrate and gravel layer, and now we are leaving it to the wind, birds and insects to bring their own mix of local seeds.

While from below the building appears to be little more than a mass of concrete and glass, on the roof we have created a natural thermal shield and a refuge for biodiversity. It is an experiment in sustainability, where an arid space will gradually transform into a pocket of spontaneous nature, perfectly adapted to the local climate. Residents will not only enjoy a better view, but also a building that breathes more easily. We have shown that nature can gain ground even on the 11th floor, as long as we provide it with the right foundation.
