Spring on the ISHO Timișoara extensive green roof

The extensive green roof on this U2 tower block in Timișoara is one of those projects we have literally watched grow before our eyes. It was built step by step, without exaggerated promises, but with the firm belief that simple things, done right, stand the test of time. It is a roof that does not try to impress at first glance, but reveals its true value as the seasons pass.

In the first part of the year, what you see is a calm, compact green surface. The sedum plants merge into a uniform carpet that softens the building visually and integrates it more naturally into the urban landscape. Seen from above and from its surroundings, the building appears less rigid, more “breathable.” This was exactly the effect we aimed for when choosing an extensive solution, free of unnecessary embellishments.

Then comes the flowering period, and without any warning, the same roof reveals a second face. The green is partially covered by thousands of yellow sedum flowers, and the terrace turns into a warm splash of color, visible from afar. It is the same roof, the same project, yet the feeling is completely different. It is precisely this natural transformation that gives it character.

The roof is extensive, designed without an irrigation system and meant to take care of itself. The plants were specifically selected for Timișoara’s climate, with its long, hot summers and periods when rain does not arrive on demand. We laid the foundations — nature does the rest.

Looking back, this is one of the projects that confirms our belief that a well-executed green roof does not need to be complicated to be successful.
