Energy efficiency and urban sustainability

A biosolar system on a green roof combines the advantages of a green roof with those of photovoltaic solar panels, maximizing energy efficiency and contributing significantly to environmental protection. This innovative technology improves the performance of solar panels through the natural cooling effect provided by vegetation, optimizing renewable energy production.

How does a biosolar system work?

How does a biosolar system work?

In a biosolar roof, photovoltaic panels are installed at a greater height than in conventional systems, being placed above the substrate and vegetation layer. This configuration allows better temperature control, because the plants create a natural shading effect, reducing panel overheating and thereby increasing their efficiency.

Benefits of a biosolar roof

  • Increased energy efficiency – The plants on the roof help maintain an optimal temperature for the solar panels, preventing their overheating.
  • Easy maintenance – Elevated panels facilitate access for maintaining the green roof and the solar system.
  • Supporting biodiversity – Diverse microclimates are created, favoring the development of a varied ecosystem of plants and insects.
  • Reduction of carbon emissions – The system actively contributes to reducing air pollution and combating the effects of climate change.
  • Protected waterproofing – Installation is carried out without perforating the waterproof membrane, using the substrate and vegetation ballast for fixing.
  • Improvement of air quality – The green roof vegetation captures dust particles and reduces pollution, contributing to a healthier urban environment.

An innovative solution for sustainable cities

Biosolar systems on green roofs are a sustainable and efficient solution to reduce the ecological impact of urban buildings. By integrating green technologies, these roofs ensure a cleaner environment, increased energy efficiency and a greener, healthier urban landscape.

2. Green tram lines with Sedum rolls

Green tram lines with Sedum rolls

A sustainable solution for green cities

The integration of Sedum rolls on tram tracks brings numerous benefits both for the environment and for urban quality of life. This innovative solution contributes to air purification, noise pollution reduction and improvement of the urban landscape, creating a more pleasant and healthier space for residents.

How does the system work?

Sedum rolls have been installed between and outside the tram rails, along the entire route. These contribute to the greening of the tram corridor, offering a natural transition between the built environment and the surrounding nature. Moreover, this arrangement favors the maintenance of biodiversity, creating a habitat for beneficial insects and other organisms.

Benefits of greening tram lines with Sedum

  • Improved air quality – Sedum captures fine dust particles and atmospheric pollutants, contributing to cleaner air.
  • Reduction of urban noise – Vegetation on the tracks absorbs sound, lowering traffic noise levels and providing a quieter environment.
  • Creation of a more pleasant urban landscape – The green appearance of the tram lines enhances the city’s aesthetics and creates a relaxing natural setting.
  • Reduction of the carbon footprint – Sedum stores on average 1.23 kg CO₂/m²/year, which means that 813 m² of rail covered with this plant absorb one ton of CO₂ per year – equivalent to the pollution produced by a gasoline car over nearly 10,000 km.

Arad is the first city in the country to have implemented a significant tram line greening project, with works carried out in the summer and autumn of 2023.

The installation was carried out on Bulevardul Revoluției and Calea Aurel Vlaicu, over a total length of 5.5 km, covering a green area of 3 hectares, without the use of irrigation systems.

3. Biograss rolls

Biograss rolls

A green and durable solution for roofs and urban spaces

A green roof made with biograss rolls adds a natural aesthetic to the city, transforming the urban environment into a more pleasant and healthy space. This innovative solution allows the instant creation of a compact green surface, offering numerous advantages over traditionally sown turf.

Advantages of using biograss rolls

  • Fast and efficient installation – Unlike seeded turf, biograss forms a dense and uniform lawn immediately after installation, eliminating waiting time and the maintenance costs associated with the first 5–7 months.
  • Resistance to extreme climatic conditions – Due to the selection of drought-resistant seeds, this type of turf withstands high temperatures and periods without precipitation, maintaining a healthy appearance and intense color.
  • Minimal maintenance – Biograss requires less care thanks to its excellent rooting capability, which significantly reduces water consumption and maintenance effort.
  • Eco-friendly and chemical-free – Grown using ecological methods, biograss does not contain pesticides or chemical herbicides. Natural weed control is achieved through regular mowing and manual removal, maintaining a healthy and safe environment.
