Logistical challenges

The implementation of a green roof system on the terrace of a mall located in the ultracentral area of Brașov represented one of the most complex logistical challenges in our recent portfolio. As this was a retrofit project in a high-density urban environment, it required rigorous planning to overcome extremely difficult access conditions. The lack of space required for crane installation made it necessary to adopt unconventional transport solutions.

All materials, from protective membranes to tons of substrate and turf rolls, were handled exclusively using the building’s internal elevator and manual lifting equipment. Big Bag sacks were transported through the mall’s technical corridors using manual pallet jacks, an operation that pushed the installation team to its limits. To avoid disrupting daily office activity and supply operations, execution was segmented into strict time windows, working mainly early in the morning and late in the evening.

The main construction phases began with the installation of mechanical protection layers and the drainage system, essential for the integrity of the supporting structure. Over the technical layers, the special extensive vegetation substrate was installed, transported with great effort through the interior of the building. The work concluded with the installation of sedum turf rolls and the delimitation of areas with decorative stone, providing the terrace with a refined aesthetic appearance and immediate thermal benefits.

The final result transforms a concrete surface into a green “lung” in the heart of the city, demonstrating that green roofs can be successfully integrated even in the most restrictive urban environments.
