Green roof for a private residence in Bucharest

In Bucharest, we wrapped up the season with a project that kept us fully engaged: installing a lightweight extensive green roof for a private residence.

Although it was already the beginning of winter, when most people were thinking about a hot cup of tea, we were working high above the ground, installing approximately 100 square meters of extensive green roof.

The site put our physical endurance to the test. Access was extremely challenging, and the height of the building required creative solutions, as all materials had to be transported using only a freight elevator. We selected a specially engineered lightweight roof build-up to protect the structure of the house while providing a durable growing system for the vegetation. Working against increasingly cold temperatures, we also integrated an automated drip irrigation system. It may seem ironic to install irrigation just before freezing weather arrives, but our goal was to deliver a fully turnkey solution, ready for Bucharest’s first summer heatwave and ensuring ideal growing conditions from the very first days of spring.

The result is a living green blanket that naturally insulates the house, protecting it from the cold in winter and the heat in summer. Even though we worked with frozen hands and transported materials to the rooftop at a time when nature itself seemed to be preparing for its winter rest, we succeeded in leaving behind a home that breathes with nature. It proves that even a private residence with difficult access can be transformed into a greener, more sustainable space when you are willing to challenge the calendar.
