Green roof on an old apartment building in Bucharest

What would it be like to have your own garden on your balcony or rooftop, where you could grow tomatoes, cucumbers, or lettuce? Difficult, but worth all the effort, say those who are actually involved in so-called urban farming.

Even restaurant courtyards now feature beds from which chefs pick fresh vegetables every morning. The investment can be affordable, but anyone taking up urban gardening must be prepared to work. You can also grow plants in front of your apartment building if you get along with your neighbors, but the most efficient solution is on the rooftop. This also solves the waterproofing problem, lowers the temperature by a few degrees, and rainwater no longer flows into the already overloaded drainage system.

See one of our projects here, implemented by the Cartierul Aviației Association, funded through the LIDL grant “Together with Lidl for a Better Future,” proving that civic initiatives can deliver results.

Odu Green Roof:

“If the structural engineers verify that the roofs are strong enough to withstand a permanent load of 80–100 kilograms, green roofs can also be installed on older buildings. Together with the restoration of the waterproofing on an old building’s roof, prices can rise up to 100 Euros per square meter plus VAT.”
