Ultra-light green roof of only 70 kg per sqm – Lobogo Resort, Băile Homorod

The ultra-light extensive green roof built at the Lobogo resort is the kind of project that cannot go unnoticed. We are talking about a vegetated system weighing only around 70 kg/m² when fully saturated with water – a strict limit imposed both by the lightweight structure of the building (wooden construction) and by its unique location, directly above a stream. There was no luxury of heavy machinery or large-capacity cranes here. Everything was carried out through manual lifting, with materials brought up piece by piece, in a confined space with difficult access and careful attention paid to every step.

The main challenge was the geometry of the roof. Although relatively small in surface area, it is fragmented by numerous skylights, edges, slopes and counter-slopes. Every detail required on-site adaptation: precise cuts, carefully planned transitions, and stabilized layers to ensure the vegetation stays in place and water is properly managed. This was not a “catalog roof,” but one built patiently, as a unique, truly tailor-made piece.

The beneficiaries’ motivation was clear and admirable: the new restaurant should visually disappear into the landscape. From the terrace located directly above, guests do not see membranes, metal sheets or sterile surfaces, but a green expanse that naturally continues the surrounding meadow. In practice, the roof does not assert itself, but retreats, allowing nature to take center stage.
